Giase: MLS All-Stars vs. Manchester United should be a hot ticket
The rumor was in Barcelona, but when the club recently announced its pre-season tour of the United States, there was no mention of Major League Soccer.
Instead, we will have a rematch of last year after the announcement Monday that Manchester United will be the opponent for 2011 MLS All-Star Game July 27 at Red Bull Arena.
"Game last year was a special occasion in front of a noisy and passionate," Man U coach Alex Ferguson said in a statement from MLS."Obviously we'll try to repeat the performance and score, but it will be a great show for everyone."
It may be difficult to match. A year ago, Man U beat the All-Stars, 5-2, before 70,728 at Reliant Stadium in Houston. seating Red Bull Arena is 25,000, which should make the game a hot ticket.
More details will be announced today.
KEEPING THE EARTH
Juan Agudelo is a child of middle age who talks about working hard and not let her sudden success go to his head.We have no reason to doubt him, but we've been down this road before:
• Freddy Adu signed with MLS in 14 in 2004, was to be the future of football, but after four years in the league, he could not wait to leave and was sold to Benfica in 2007. His American career (15 games, 2 goals) was not shot and it bounced through France, Portugal, Greece and Turkey in search of playing time loan.
• Eddie Johnson scored eight goals in his first nine games with the U.S. and it appeared the U.S. had a legitimate scorer for the next decade. But since 2006, Johnson has four goals in 33 games with the United States and has not made the 2010 World Cup team. With 27 on Thursday, he is always in search of playing time for his fourth European team since 2008.
• Jozy Altidore, drafted at 16 by the Red Bulls in 2006, leaving MLS for Europe 18 years and has never won a starting spot in the lineup despite being loaned to clubs in Spain, England and Turkey. His game has stagnated, but he scored 10 goals in 33 international matches and he's still only 21.
None of these players, especially Altidore was canceled, but the national team needs goal scorers, a skill that takes time to develop, and can not be sitting on a bench in Europe where you can play regularly in MLS.
The fear is that this can happen to Agudelo?
"The advice we gave him is to keep your feet on the ground by this whole affair," U.S. coach Bob Bradley said after the 18-year Agudelo scored against Argentina on Saturday night, his second goal in three games international. "His situation at the Red Bull is a good thing. It is there that the players are a good example that looks up, he learns. ... I think he understands that if it is good to have these exciting times, getting better each day is key.
