More Card Issuers Waive Foreign Transaction Fees

For cardholders who rely on credit cards for travel expenses, the foreign transaction fees can add up quickly - and experts say they are becoming more pervasive way. For example, most card issuers now charge a transaction fee on foreign purchases online from overseas suppliers - consumers surprising. The last charge is particularly unpopular, experts say, as cardholders few online purchases are realizing that they could end up with an additional 3 percent if they faced the seller is located overseas.

However, in recent months, some card issuers have begun to waive fees for foreign transactions on cards selected in an effort to gain a competitive advantage. Capital One has long been the sole issuer of the card does not charge foreign transaction fees, but card issuers Chase, Citi, American Express and HSBC have jumped on the train and removing fees from a handful of cards .

Transaction fees waived - for some even if the trend towards the elimination of transaction costs abroad seems to be catching on, some consumer advocates point out that all cardholders will benefit.

"The trend is primarily to eliminate the tax for foreign high-end cards that have high annual fees attached to it," said Joe Ridout, consumer services manager at Consumer Action, a consumer advocacy group. "So it's not like these cards are free. If you're a big spender and will last many expenses with the card, this fee may be worth it. But consumers just looking to avoid fees transactions with foreign countries may be better with a card issuer that does not charge transaction fees on one of his cards."

Ridout points Capital One as an example of a card issuer to waive transaction fees with foreign countries on all its credit cards. Capital One also absorbs the 1 percent fee charged by Visa and MasterCard for processing foreign transactions.

Meanwhile, Andrew Davidson, senior vice president at Mintel Comperemedia predicts that we are yet to see an end to this trend. As competition in the credit card industry will deteriorate further, it can lead to other benefits to consumers out, "said Davidson.

credit card offers mailed nearly tripled to 1.4 billion in the fourth quarter of 2010, compared to 551 million for the same period in 2009 and have been rising for five consecutive quarters. Although, Davidson points out, more than half of these offers are sent by the three major card issuers, JP Morgan Chase, Citigroup and American Express. As card issuers larger scale applications credit card, he predicted that competitive pressures will intensify.
