Balance transfer credit card offers remain strong

Ever since the Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act ( CARD Act ) was signed into law on May 22, 2009, there has been much speculation about the future of 0% introductory credit cards, and more specifically about 0% balance transfer cards .

Thus far in 2011, the answer has been very clear: Balance transfer offers are not only not vanishing, but they appear to be getting stronger. Current credit card offers for new cardholders in the credit card marketplace include deals for 0% APR balance transfers for 12, 15, 18, and even 24 months.

These 12- to 24-month introductory period lengths trump the typical 6- to 12-month spans seen in the recent past.

Citi, for example, recently increased the introductory period for two of its new card offers, with each now offering 0% interest on purchases and balance transfers for 18 months.

Some banks and issuers are offering these deals on a limited basis. Discover Card currently has two strong offers, one for 0% APR on balance transfers for 24 months , and another for a 0% on balance transfers for 12 months with no balance transfer fees . However, both of these offers are to end today, February 28, 2011.

Increased balance transfer fees have been one change seemingly brought on by the CARD Act. But, nevertheless, balance transfers remain a valuable tool for those looking to temporarily extend debt repayment.
