New $ 5 fee ATM just the last trap check Posted: Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 07:00 by Bob Sullivan CT"Verification of Total." Verification of value. "" Checking MyAccess. " What they all have in common? The word "free" is missing in the name.
You're probably painfully aware that the big banks like Chase, Wells Fargo and Bank of America ended without conditions attached free checking accounts. But if you have questions about how restrictive - and expensive - the strings can be, consider the Chase bank. Barely two years ago, we marveled efforts of banks to charge up to 3 inches per withdrawal.Chase bank is now test driving the $ 5 withdrawal fee for non-customers in Illinois. This is in addition to fees the bank charges for consumers. Soon it may cost $ 10 to $ 20 in support of rigor.
Once upon a time, consumers can expect to earn money by leaving their money sitting in a bank. Today, consumers need to worry about their bank slowly bleeding money from the account. The change happens quickly. Chase said it converted about 8 million free accounts - many former customers of Washington Mutual - to "follow our rules or pay-up-to-$ 144 per year" accounts.
It costs about $ 300 banks each year to provide financial control, according to a recent study of Bretton Woods. They used to recover these costs by themselves contribute to a value of approximately $ 30 billion in overdraft fees from consumers. But now the cash cow that has been largely eliminated by the new consumer regulations, banks are trying new techniques to recover this lost income.
How far banks can push the price to consumers tired? It is not clear. Earlier this month, Bankrate.com has published a poll showing 75 percent of consumers earning $ 75,000 or more would rather switch banks than paying higher fees. Overall, 64 percent of clients said they would bolt.
That anger may not translate into reality, however, and banks know this. A JD Power study released March 1 found that while consumers are switching banks at a rate slightly higher than in the past (8.7 per cent last year compared to 7.7 percent a year earlier), fees and interest rates have almost nothing to do with their choice. "Price" hit only 4 percent of consumers, the study found.
It would not be a surprise to the behavioral economists. Consumers almost never consider the cost - especially as punitive overdraft fees or "your balance has fallen below $ 1,000" charges - when making purchasing decisions. Almost everyone suffers from what is sometimes called "magical thinking" - as in "I'll never misbehave and get hit by this tax.
